Assessment Foster Care

North American Family Institute (NAFI) provides a short term, 90-day, Assessment Foster Care program which provides foster care placement to children who have experienced family disruption. Children ages 6-18 are placed in a stable, therapeutic environment and are provided with assessment of their behavioral, emotional and mental health needs. The program is aligned with child welfare best practice as children in need of placement stabilization will be placed in the least restrictive environment while a comprehensive assessment of the child’s needs is conducted. At the end of the 90 day period, detailed recommendations are made to identify next steps in the areas of placement, school, behavior and mental health.
The program is designed to provide emergency or immediate foster care to 7-9 children for a period of 90 days. Each child is supported by a team that includes the foster family, case manager, and clinician. Intensive clinical and case management services are an integral component of the Assessment Foster Care program. Each child who enters the program is assigned a Master’s level clinician and case manager. Upon entry into the program, a critical needs assessment will be conducted within one business day to identify and address any immediate needs of the child. Within 15 days of placement, the program clinician begins the process of completing a thorough, strengths-based clinical assessment to determine the child’s level of stability; identify the child’s mental health needs; identify the child’s strengths and coping skills; and identify the child’s areas of needed growth. As part of the clinical assessment, the clinician uses eco-mapping, genograms, and social atoms to identify care givers and significant relationships in the child’s life.
